Welcome! My name is Matthew Beale and I am a Digital Writing lecturer in the English department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA where I teach courses in digital writing, game studies, and technical communication.
I earned my Ph.D. in English from Old Dominion University in 2019. My dissertation, “Rhetorics of functionally applicative game design: Designing and testing the project management game Scrummage,” examined scrum project management as rhetorical practice. As part of the project, I designed and tested a pedagogical, cooperative tabletop game to teach scrum to undergraduate technical communication students. In addition to rhetorics of game design and technical communication, my research interests include dynamics of teamwork and collaboration, the pedagogical efficacy of games, play studies, and GIFs.
Outside of academic life, I can be found enjoying tabletop games with friends, playing guitar or ukulele, or trying to figure out why my colliders in Unity aren’t working.
If you have questions about my research or teaching (or would just like to say hi), I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
